The closing ceremony

The closing ceremony

It was April 28th, a very warm and sunny spring day in Vilnius, but the EUSO2012 participants didn’t care much about the weather, they were very excited because it was the last day of the Olympiad. In the afternoon all the delegations went to the hall of Lithuanian Science Academy where the closing ceremony was held.

This unforgettable week in Lithuania culminated in event full of words of gratitude, smiles and even tears. After the honorary guests shared their impressions on this wonderful week and congratulated everyone, we had a chance to enjoy the beautiful sounds of the KIWI choir.

Finally, it was time to bring in the awards. Bronze medals were distributed via one of a kind EUSO lottery – one by one the bronze medals were given to the teams which were hidden in the lottery balls. For the silver medal distribution, a more technologically sophisticated way was chosen – 10 EUSO volunteers armed with SAMSUNG tablets occupied the stage. When the last silver medal was dealt, the stage was left to our honorary patron H.E. President Valdas Adamkus who was given a mission to award the gold medals. Mr. Adamkus drew six golden envelopes containing golden EUSO 2012 teams. Among them, there was the Estonian team A which received the EUSO cup from the hands our beloved Presidents Valdas Adamkus and Michael A. Cotter and became the absolute winners of this years’ competition.

Traditionally, the ceremony ended with a group photo on the stairs of the Lithuanian Science Academy, after which everyone joined the organisers on a friendly walk back to the hotel Panorama, home of EUSO 2012 for the farewell party – the last chance to spend some time together and finish this Olympiad with a bang.
